Crying- Don’t Miss the Opportunity by Sharon Silver

Crying—Don’t miss the opportunity

A child cries and a pained look appears on her parent’s face, a familiar scene in most families. That pained look might represent a fear mom has that she caused her child some pain. Or that look might be unexpressed frustration as if to say, “why are you so upset, you know this isn’t allowed.”

You might be thinking, “That’s a pretty big generalization” and it is. The truth is crying and a parent’s reaction to it is far more complicated than that.

I haven’t met a parent yet who doesn’t feel a tug at their heart strings when their child cries. At the same time I think most parents understand that crying is part of the language of early childhood. Having those two thoughts at once can confuse parents and may cause them to miss a great teaching moment.

• The teaching moment I’m speaking about is teaching your child how to manage their own temperament and reactions. When you stop reacting and start responding you’re better able to capture the moment and teach some things that will really help your child as she grows.  Let me show you what I mean.

Some children fall to the floor and cry as if their heart is breaking. Some children cry loudly while looking around the room to see how much attention they’re getting. And some cry because they’re bored and have figured out that if they go toward something that’s a “no” it’s a sure way to get their parent to distract them into another activity.

• When faced with situations like that most parents focus on getting the crying to STOP. They yell, punish, back down, feel sympathy or plead for it to stop. All parents know that it’s practically impossible to stop a child from expressing their emotions once they’ve begun. Allowing your child to express his/her feelings is key in parenting. If parents insist crying stops now, or they don’t teach how you’re supposed to manage feelings, a child may make crying a larger part of how they interact with others.

• The child who falls on the floor crying as if her heart is broken not only needs to learn how to accept being told “no” but she also needs to know how to deal with and express her beautiful sensitive nature.

• The child who cries loudly while looking for attention needs to know that creating drama is not the way to get what you want. She needs to know that so she can get along with friends, teachers, and family. She also needs to know how to embrace and work with her intensity and power. She could end up being president and will need to be powerful.

• The child who’s bored and cries so his parents will redirect him toward something more interesting needs to learn what he likes to do so he can manage boredom for himself. He needs know this or he’ll constantly be relying on his parents and others for his entertainment.

When you switch from trying to stop crying at all costs to allowing a child to get it out of her system you’re much calmer and then better able to teach her what she needs to learn so she can manage all the complicated situations that happen every day in life. Review: UnderCover Mama

Review: Undercover Mama

February 6th, 2010: If you are in the stage of your life where you are nursing a baby then the Undercover Mama is definitely something that you need to invest in. You don’t want to be stuck at home all the time when you need to nurse the baby but you also want to keep a little modesty when out in public. The Undercover Mama is great for this because it is a shirt that attaches to your nursing bra to function as an undershirt to keep your belly and back covered while breastfeeding. You will feel like you are wearing a regular cami under you shirt, but when you need to nurse you still just have to undo the flap on your bra and Undercover Mama opens with it- No extra flaps or hooks to deal with each time. Undercover Mama’s generous length make them great to layer under your shirts and allow you to nurse comfortably.

When I got the Undercover Mama in the mail last week, I was so excited to try it out. I had two occasions this week where I was going to be visiting with family members and knew that I would have to nurse the baby while they were around. I hate being quarantined to the bedroom or other room just because I have to whip out my boob and then the rest of me is showing as well. It’s no fun being alone when the rest of the family is out socializing in the other room. With the Undercover Mama, I was able to feel comfortable nursing the baby while being able to hold a conversation without feeling exposed to the world. I love this product because I can wear a non nursing shirt on top because the Undercover Mama is there to cover you up!

So for all you MoMs out there who want to nurse your baby in public but don’t want to show the world your belly then you need to check out the Undercover Mama.

BUY IT: Check out Undercover Mama on Living My MoMent to find out how you can purchase this product!

Undercover Mama

Are you frustrated with the lack of options there are for nursing wear? You don’t want to buy a whole new wardrobe to feel comfortable while nursing. MoM of 5, Elisa from Utah was aching to get back into her regular, everyday clothes, too. The problem she faced was when she pulled her shirt up to nurse in public she was left with her back, side and belly partially exposed; not something she loved showing off, especially after having a baby. So in 2008, she developed the Undercover Mama, a great undershirt that doesn’t leave you dealing with more clasps, flaps, etc. to dig through every time you nurse your baby.

Undercover Mama functions as an undershirt, keeping your back, sides and belly covered as you nurse. It has no straps and attaches directly to the outer flaps of any top-opening nursing bra. Undercover Mama remains attached while in use.

So, if you are ready to keep a little bit of modesty when out nursing your baby, then check out http://www.undercovermama.com

Posted by LivingmyMoMent on Monday, February 8th, 2010

February 6th, 2010: Wouldn’t it be nice to be able to customize your children’s shirts so that you can celebrate special occasions with a great tangible memory? That’s why I’m so glad that Emily from My Emmy Baby wanted me to do a review for her on one of her custom made children’s t-shirts.

Luci’s second birthday is right around the corner and Emily made her a I’m Two Shirt that also has her name on it. The design and style of the shirt are perfect for someone celebrating a big birthday. As per the instructions, I washed the shirt before letting Luci wear it and the print held up great in the washing machine. It did not fade or crack like many iron on type shirts tend to do. Luci loves the fact that she can wear this shirt for the next two weeks to let the world know that she is TWO!

So, if you want a custom, personalized fashion just for your child then you definitely need to check out My Emmy Baby. She is great to work with and will help you come up with some fantastic just for your child. All I told her was that Luci’s 2nd birthday was coming up soon, the size of the shirt I would need and Emily just whipped up a great looking shirt that I know that Luci will cherish for a long time.

BUY IT: Check out My Emmy Baby’s listing on Living My MoMent to find out how you can purchase your own fabulous shirt!

WIN IT: You have the chance to win your own shirt by entering our My Emmy Baby Giveaway by midnight on February 10th!

Review: Mommy Mitten

Review: Mommy Mitten

(The following review was done as part of my membership in the Happy and Healthy Mom Product Review Team)

1/25/2010: If you live in parts of the country where the weather gets super cold then you know how chapped your hands can get just walking the stroller from your car to the inside of the warm mall. Gloves are great but what happens when you have to pick up something quick that your baby just dropped and the best way to save it is with nimble hands. You are fidgeting to get your gloves off and by now the baby is screaming and the toy is wet and dirty and that’s why you totally need to invest in the Mommy Mitten.

Mommy Mitten is a hand warmer that easily secures around the handle bar of your baby stroller to keep your hands protected from the elements without having to deal with clumsy, easy to lose gloves or mittens. And what a great product this is. I took the kids to the mall the other day and my Mommy Mitten came in handy when I to bend down and grab my daughter’s glove to save it from the wet muck in the street. Another great use for the Mommy Mitten is on grocery carts. Those suckers can get bitter cold when they are sitting out in the parking lot. I hate taking my toddler’s mittens into the store cause they always seem to get lost but she gets cold otherwise and complains about it. So I had her use the Mommy Mitten and it kept her hands warm and kept her entertained as well.

I would recommend this product to any mom out there who needs the warmth of a glove but the convenience of your own bare hands. Thanks to Amy at Mommy Mitten for coming up with such an innovative and useful products for our Midwestern cold handed MoMs.

BUY IT: You can purchase your own Mommy Mitten for 29.99 on their website!
